Mercury In Retrograde

CD album | gg315
Amy Denio is a Seattle-based multi-instrumental composer of soundtracks for modern dance, film and theater, as well as a songwriter and music improviser. Often called an unclassifiable avant-garde jazz musician, her main instruments are voice, alto saxophone, clarinet, accordion, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, and theremin. Among her current musical involvements are The Tiptons Sax Quartet (formerly The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet) and Kultur Shock, an international Balkan gypsy/metal/punk group based in Seattle. She has also collaborated repeatedly with the Pat Graney Dance Company, David Dorfman Dance Company, Victoria Marks, and with many other choreographers. Her first recording was No Bones released as a cassette on her record label Spoot Music in 1986. Her first LP was with the Entropics. She founded Tiptons in 1987, and also started Tone Dogs with bassist Fred Chalenor. Tone Dogs' first release Ankety Low Day was nominated for a Grammy Award. She has performed and recorded with (among others) Matt Cameron, KMFDM, Curlew, Fred Frith, Pointless Orchestra, Francisco López, Danny Barnes, Pale Nudes, The Danubians, Chris Cutler, Guy Klucevsek, Pauline Oliveros, Derek Bailey, Chuck D, Bill Rieflin and Die Knoedel. Her new album Eureka consists of pieces she has composed during the last 18 months covering a wide variety of styles while playing a plethora of instruments and working with field recordings. Some songs were inspired by her deep love of Balkan culture (she's played dozens of concerts in ex-Yugoslavia since 1990). Other compositions were conceived and recorded in a single day ~ thus the title Eureka. Amy says the songs wrote themselves, she is merely the vessel. Other tracks are commissioned pieces, some for the cinema, one for a Patreon subscriber who requested a steamy love song connected to Iceland. Amy Denio is a musician who cannot be labelled and put into one category. Full tracklist: 1. Pozdravko Kolo (Greeting Circle Dance) 2. Petoljubac (Five Kisses) 3. Sretan Ruže Dan (Happy Roses Day) 4. An eighteen song propulsion of that river of creativity from multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist Amy Denio. For fans, they already know her tireless energy and abilities to make music from many regions, and prolific output over decades, since her early years with Tone Dogs. This is her 17th solo recording and includes so much of what you already love about her lyrics, vocals, and musical adventure. It is no surprise that she has gained the title of Seattles Jazz Hall of Fame Avant Goddess. (...) Not only does Amy usher you all over the world but creates atmospheres in some of those places, either unique or rare for the ears. (...) Ms. Denio goes places none of her comparative artists would ever tread. Words are not enough to describe how great this album is, so buy it and hear for yourself. With plenty of warm vocal, glockenspiel, harmony, accordion, stringed acoustics, saxes, frame drum, and other sundry instruments, this is all incredible. Gigantic Recommendation.
