CHANSONS DU CREPUSCULE (HELENE BRESCHAND & ELLIOTT SHARP) Une Lumiere Tenace
Chansons du Crepuscule is the duo of Parisian Helene Breschand and New Yorker Elliott Sharp - both multi-instrumentalist composers and improvisers. Their latest album, Une Lumiere Tenace, continues their tradition of restructuring pataphysical flotsam and jetsam of the 20th century to create a futuristic mix of neurotica, erotica, noise, grooves, virtuosity, crudity, and the spirit of play - a dark melange that is both welcoming and frightening. Both sing in French and English and Helene is heard playing harp, electric harp, piano, zither, and electronics while E# is heard on bass, guitars, invented instruments, synthesizers, piano, mandocello, and drum programming. Une Lumiere Tenace was recorded in Paris and NYC and mixed by E# in NYC at this Studio zOaR.
Though their sound is unique, comparisons may be made to Public Image Ltd, Einsturzende Neubauten, Diamanda Galas, Can, and Neu. Full tracklist: 1. Emergence 2. Addiction Or Confession 3. Breschand and Sharp suggest evocative songs that allow themselves to get lost and find themselves anew in the rich sonic forests of their idiosyncratic, exploratory languages. The eleven songs blend Breschands siren-like, sensual voice and suggestive, dream-like songs, sung in French and following the legacy of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg, and her experimental harp playing, with Sharps nuanced, saturated orchestration and surprisingly commanding vocal delivery, also in French.
